I have a 2002 subaru outback. The trailer hitch specifically sold for it at the subaru dealer is $250, but autozone and other places sell trailer hitches for around $110. Could I get by with the cheaper hitch?

Depends on how confident you are as far as installing it yourself.
The hitch rating is what to look for.

You need to look at what you want to pull first…and what class of hitch it takes. I could imagine the hitch you need is a class a or the smallest one. The outback, even with a 6cyl. will not be rated for much pulling capacity since it doesn’t have a frame like a truck, So look at the tow capacity for the outback(it should be in the owner’s manual) or you can get the info. from a dealer. Then look at the class hitch you need to pull what you are going to pull and make sure that hitch bar you put on the car is rated to handle the weight of what you are pulling, along with the hitch ball being the right class….then you should be set. You can get by with a cheaper one if it is rated to pull heavy enough of a load.

Some vehicles only take the right hitch,if you put the wrong one on you could be creating problems for yourself,so ask the dealer about this and also ask a hitch dealer on this issue-also ask a camper sales person, they might know of after markit hitches

Your local U-Haul dealer sells and installs trailer hitches for your Subaru. The 2002 Subaru Outback is only rated for towing 2000 lbs (combined trailer and cargo weight), so be careful you don’t overload it.
