I have an eight foot trailer. The axle is three feet from the back of the trailer. I am building a nine foot trailer. How far from the back should the axle go?

As a very basic rule of thumb your axle should be centered under the bed front to back. Since you don’t state what the trailer is for it’s tuff to help more then this. So 4′6″ from the front or rear is where it needs to be. The reason that axles are centered is so the trailer carries the load not the tow vehicle. Exceptions of course exist like O.T.R. tractor/trailers which have suspensions designed to carry very heavy loads. The standard is 12,000#s on the steer axle and 34,000#s on the drive axles and another 34,000#s on the trailer axles.
